Energy at Dawn: What to Eat Before an Early Surf

Energía al Amanecer: Qué Comer Antes del Surf Temprano

Surfing at dawn is magical: the sea is glassier, there are fewer people, and there's a special vibe. But… there's one key detail that can make the difference between an epic session and coming out of the water exhausted: what you eat before going in the sea .

When you surf very early in the morning, your body has been fasting for several hours, so it needs fast energy that is easy to digest and doesn't feel heavy .

The purpose of the pre-surf breakfast

Before you go into the water, you look for:

  • Instant energy ⚡

  • Good digestion (no nausea)

  • Maintain strength and concentration

  • Avoid the mid-session slump

The key is simple carbohydrates + a little fat or light protein .

What to eat before surfing early

1. Banana

The king of pre-surf.

  • Fast energy

  • Easy to digest

  • Potassium to prevent cramps

👉 Ideal if you're not hungry but need something.

2. Toast with honey or jam

  • Fast carbohydrates

  • It doesn't feel heavy.

  • Perfect 20–30 min before entering the water

  • Note from Mazatlán - We recommend buttercookies and coffee before surfing.

Extra tip: if you want something more complete, add a little peanut butter.

3. Light oats (small portion)

If you have a little more time:

  • More sustainable energy

  • It maintains the level of strength

  • Ideal for long sessions

Prepare it simply: oats + water or plant-based milk + fruit.

4. Quick Smoothie

Perfect if you don't like chewing so early.
Example:

  • Banana

  • A splash of plant-based milk or water

  • A little oatmeal or dates

👉 Fast energy without feeling full.

5. Coffee or tea ☕

  • It helps to awaken

  • Improves focus and reaction

⚠️ Important tip: do not take it alone, accompany it with some food to avoid dizziness.

🚫 What to avoid before surfing

  • Very greasy foods (fried eggs, chilaquiles, tacos)

  • Lots of heavy protein

  • Excess sugars

  • Eating too much right before entering

All of that can make you feel sluggish, heavy, or uncomfortable in the water.

⏰ How long before eating?

  • Light snack: 15–30 minutes before

  • Light breakfast: 45–60 minutes before

If the swell is firing and there's no time: banana + water and into the water 🤙

🌊 Bonus tip post-surf

After surfing, finally have a proper breakfast : protein, carbohydrates, and plenty of hydration. Your body will thank you.

Surfing early is a ritual, and what you eat beforehand is part of it. Keep it simple, light, and functional… and let the energy flow with every wave 🌊✨
